Guidance

To provide free resources for those involved or affected by all types of linear infrastructure and transport, including roads, railways, power-lines, pipelines, tracks, and trails, in order to include the world’s best ecological-practice in projects.

Creating a Global Standard of Expertise.

This resource draws on many years of experience and scientific research to offer practical guidance and forward-thinking approaches for lessening the environmental impact of transport infrastructure. It champions nature-based practices and encourages efforts to reconnect fragmented habitats, strengthen green networks, and support ecosystem recovery.

Building infrastructure that is not only safe and resilient but also supports biodiversity and enhances human well-being depends on strong collaboration between sectors, continuous learning, and knowledge exchange. This handbook is designed as an evolving tool—open to contributions and updates from its users. We invite you to share your insights and help shape its future!

The development and ongoing management of this digital handbook is led by IENE and inspired by the original European ‘Wildlife and Traffic’ guidelines established through COST Action 341 in 2003. Its continuation is made possible through the Horizon 2020 BISON project, which explores synergies between biodiversity and European transport networks.

Partnerships

TransportEcology.info are excited to work with the Infrastructure Ecology Network Europe (IENE) as a knowledge sharing platform.

IENE was established in 1996 and its mission is to promote the exchange of knowledge, experience and best practice in safe and sustainable pan-European transport infrastructure. This independent network has more than 400 members consisting of researchers, engineers, decision makers and infrastructure operators. IENE functions as an international and interdisciplinary forum. It supports cross-border cooperation in research, mitigation, planning, design, construction and maintenance in the field of biodiversity and transport infrastructure.

TransportEcology.info encourages you to check out the important work of IENE, participate in their conferences and other events and become a member.

Keeping habitats connected, people safe and wildlife secure.
